Drain Distress

After discovering that their drain is clogged, most people use liquid drain cleaners because they are inexpensive and it doesn’t require a lot of effort. However, liquid chemical drain cleaners actually make it harder on plumbers to clean an already clogged drain. Did you know you can create your own concoction to effectively clean your drain at home with only two common household ingredients?

Stay away from liquid drain cleaners

The harsh ingredients and chemicals found in liquid drain cleaners strip away the pipes properties because they are meant to dissolve any hair, grease, soap or leftover food that got stuck in the pipes. The chemicals are so strong that they can deteriorate the pipes themselves as well.

Liquid drain cleaners are filled with toxic chemicals that are unhealthy to breathe in. These chemicals stay dormant in the air long after they have been poured down the drain and can sting and irritate your nose and eyes, while some cleaners can clog your drain even further. If too much of a product is used it can even solidify. Mixing certain products together can generate even further damage to your pipes. Crystal based chemicals can create a “choking cloud of lye-laden” gas when it is exposed to aluminum. Many household cleaners contain the chemical ammonia, which is unsafe because it can burst out of your pipes.

Drain cleaners are also unhealthy for the earth. It’s unsafe to even breathe in these toxic chemicals, so imagine how they are affecting the environment when they make their way into the ground.

At home remedy

A simpler option is to use ingredients that you may already have at home to clean your drain. Opting to use baking soda, vinegar and hot water might do the trick to unclog your drain. Start by pouring boiling hot water down your drain and then add about a half cup of baking soda. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and then pour one cup of vinegar and one cup of boiling hot water down the drain. Make sure to cover the drain because mixing baking soda and vinegar will create an explosive reaction. Add more boiling water to flush out anything else that may be leftover.
