It can be tricky to stay on top of keeping your home in tip-top shape. From the kitchen to the living room, your bedroom, the kids’ rooms and the bathrooms, it takes a lot to keep your home tidy! Sometimes it’s easier to focus on one room at a time, especially when it comes to the dreaded deep cleaning. Your bathroom(s) are probably the most important places in your home to keep clean since germs, microbes, and mold are attracted to the moisture from the shower, sink, and toilet.

Did you know the grout between the tiles in your shower or tub area is a prime place for potentially harmful fungus and microbes to thrive? That’s why it’s so important to keep the grout in your shower clean – not only will regular cleanings prevent ugly staining from occurring, it will keep your shower fresh, clean, and healthy! How do you do this? Things like Clorox spray or bleach might come to mind, but you don’t necessarily need to break out the strong stuff every time you clean your shower. We aren’t saying you should never use strong cleaning agents, but there are natural cleaning agents you can use as well. Read on for natural ways to keep your shower’s grout clean without using the harsh chemicals found in store-bought cleaners.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is great for getting light stains off your grout! Just use a damp sponge and gently rub baking soda onto the grout in your bathtub/shower area. Let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse it off with warm water.

White Vinegar

If your grout requires a deeper clean or if the stains on your grout are bad, use a sponge with white vinegar and wipe down the surface of your shower. Then scrub away with baking soda. These two agents together will create a fizzling reaction, but DON’T combine them together in a bottle since you aren’t trying to go for a volcano effect!

Hydrogen Peroxide

If there is mold in your shower, break out the hydrogen peroxide. Mix 1 part with 1 part water in a spray bottle and spray it onto the grout. Wait about an hour and scrub the grout, then rinse your shower or tub area.

Combination of Natural Ingredients

You can experiment on your own to see which cleaner works best for keeping your restroom clean. Try combining natural cleaners to create a mixture of your own. Dish soap, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda work well together. You can even try throwing in some Epson salts or lemon juice! Just make sure not to combine things that have a potentially dangerous reaction. Do your research first. For instance, mixing hydrogen peroxide with vinegar in a container is a no-no since this creates peracetic acid which can irritate your skin and hands. You can use them separately, just not combined in a bottle or container.
